Achievements of BP Azerbaijan in the area of environmental protection

Saadat Gafarova,  Environmental Regulation and External Relations Adviser, Compliance and Environmental Protection, BP Azerbaijan

- As the leading operator of major oil & gas projects both in Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea, BP Azerbaijan attaches a great significance to the need of protecting the environment and has been doing its utmost to ensure that all our operations and projects are carried out as safely as possible. This applies to both the Company employees and people living in the neighbourhood of our facilities, and the country and the region as a whole.

BP Azerbaijan has been present in Azerbaijan for 25 years, and during this time, the Company has always demonstrated that it is possible to work successfully on construction, land or sea operations, while observing global environmental standards. This is a very important obligation for all operators. At the Caspian Ecology 2017 exhibition we will demonstrate the Company's achievements in the area of ecology and in the field of security of operations and development works. We will also talk about the projects implemented and the programs sponsored. BP Azerbaijan is committed to being involved in all environmental protection activities to the maximum possible extent.

BP is a co-founder of the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership (GGFRP) under the auspices of the World Bank, and our Company has made great efforts to make this programme a success. BP Azerbaijan can also boast of high achievements in the area of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions. BP Azerbaijan has undertaken this obligation to reduce the flaring of associated petroleum gas (APG) jointly with SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan). So, from the year 2008 to 1 July 2017, APG flaring was reduced by 80%.

BP Azerbaijan is a regular participant at Caspian Ecology, and I can say with confidence that our stand is one of the best. The visitors of the last exhibition were very interested in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, climate change and how BP Azerbaijan resolves environmental issues. At Caspian Ecology 2017, our Company will hold a presentation where we will tell you about the tremendous work carried out in this area since 2005, while saying a few words about the cooperation between BP Global and world organisations. Note that the problem of climate change has certain risks for oil and gas companies, so we will continue to work actively on environmental issues.
